The Rack

15 things we'd spend our own money on, sorted by price. Mostly shoes, because that's where we start, plus the care kit and accessories that make them last. Every pick lists what it won't do.

How we make money: some links below are affiliate links. If you buy through them, Via may earn a commission. It never changes the price you pay, and it never decides what we recommend. Full disclosure.

Under $100. Small purchases that pay off out of all proportion.

Shelves of canvas high-top sneakers in black, white, red, green and navy.

Entry · under $100

Converse Chuck 70 Hi

Heavier canvas, a taller rubber foxing, and a cushier insole than the standard Chuck; a weekend shoe that costs less than a nice dinner.

Won't do: Almost no arch support for long days on your feet, and the canvas soaks through in the first real rain.

A tan moccasin-style boat shoe worn with cuffed jeans beside an iron fence.

Entry · under $100

Sperry Authentic Original Boat Shoe

A hand-sewn moccasin boat shoe with rawhide laces and a siped non-marking sole; the default summer shoe for shorts and linen.

Won't do: Thin cushioning makes it a poor choice for a long city walk, and it looks out of place with anything heavier than chinos.

Entry · under $100

Saphir Médaille d'Or Renovateur (75 ml)

A mink-oil-based cleaner and conditioner that lifts old polish and puts moisture back into smooth leather in one pass.

Won't do: It adds no color and no shine, so you still need cream or wax afterward, and it is not for suede or nubuck.

Rows of old wooden shoe forms in light and dark grain, hung close together on a wall.

Entry · under $100

Woodlore Epic Cedar Shoe Trees

Split-toe aromatic cedar trees with a full heel; they pull moisture out of the lining overnight and hold the vamp flat so creases relax.

Won't do: Sizing is in broad bands, so very narrow or very short lasts may not fill out properly.

A wooden-handled brush with soft pale bristles, shown close up on white.

Entry · under $100

Jason Markk Essential Kit

A concentrated cleaning solution and a hog-hair brush that handle white midsoles, canvas, and leather sneaker uppers.

Won't do: It cleans but does not condition, so smooth dress leather still needs a proper cream afterward.

Feet in thick gray wool socks with ribbed green-and-yellow cuffs, propped up indoors.

Entry · under $100

Darn Tough Hiker Micro Crew Cushion

A cushioned merino-blend boot sock with a lifetime guarantee; warm when damp, and it doesn't hold odor through a long day in boots.

Won't do: Far too thick for dress shoes or loafers, and pricey per pair until you count the replacements you won't buy.

Mid

$100 to $299. Where most of a good wardrobe actually lives.

Brown suede two-eyelet desert boots worn with dark jeans on a city sidewalk.

Mid · $100–$299

Clarks Originals Desert Boot

The two-eyelet suede chukka on a crepe sole: light, soft from day one, and the easiest way to dress up chinos or dress down a sport coat.

Won't do: The crepe sole wears quickly on concrete and picks up grit, and untreated suede is no match for a downpour.

Mid · $100–$299

Blundstone #500 Chelsea Boot

A water-resistant leather pull-on boot with elastic gussets and a shock-absorbing sole; on in five seconds, comfortable for a full day.

Won't do: There are no laces to tune the fit, so narrow heels may slip, and the injected sole can't be resoled the traditional way.

G.H. Bass Weejuns Larson Penny Loafer

The classic penny loafer with a beefroll strap and leather sole; it works with chinos, odd jackets, and summer suits.

Won't do: The polished leather can crease hard at the flex point, and the last runs long enough that many buyers go down half a size.

A pair of gray and silver New Balance running shoes on a brick ledge beside blue hand weights.

Mid · $100–$299

New Balance Made in USA 990v6

A grey suede-and-mesh runner with real cushioning; the comfortable choice for travel days and weekends on your feet.

Won't do: The chunky silhouette fights with tailored trousers, and pale suede and mesh show dirt quickly.

Discussed in Leather Soles vs. Rubber Soles: A Commuter's Verdict

A tan leather belt with stitched edges and a solid brass buckle, shown close up.

Mid · $100–$299

Tanner Goods Standard Belt

A single layer of thick vegetable-tanned leather with a solid brass buckle, built to darken and soften over years of daily wear.

Won't do: At 1.5 inches wide it is too broad for most suit-trouser loops, and it starts stiff.

Investment

$300 and up. Only worth it if you will wear it, and repair it, for years.

A black leather cap-toe oxford with closed lacing propped on a shoeshine stand.

Investment · $300+

Allen Edmonds Park Avenue Cap-Toe Oxford

A Goodyear-welted calfskin cap-toe oxford with a closed lacing that sits clean under suit trousers and can be recrafted by the maker when the sole is done.

Won't do: Too formal for jeans or chinos, and the leather sole is slick on wet pavement for the first few weeks.

A pair of worn tan leather lace-up work boots with yellow laces and visible welt stitching.

Investment · $300+

Red Wing Heritage Iron Ranger 6-Inch Boot

A triple-stitched, Goodyear-welted lace-up work boot in oil-tanned leather with a double-layer toe cap; it molds to the foot and resoles for years.

Won't do: Heavy and stiff for the first month, and most wearers size down half a size from their sneakers.

A pair of plain white leather low-top sneakers worn with gray sweatpants on grass scattered with yellow petals.

Investment · $300+

Common Projects Achilles Low

A minimal white leather sneaker with a stitched rubber cupsole that reads clean with tailoring as easily as with denim.

Won't do: You pay mostly for leather and finish rather than construction, and white leather shows every crease and scuff.

Investment · $300+

Filson Original Briefcase

Rugged twill with bridle-leather trim and a brass zipper; it looks right in an office and shrugs off a decade of commuting.

Won't do: There is no padded laptop sleeve, and the heavy twill and leather add real weight before you've packed anything.
